BOLINGBROKE, Henry ST. JOHN, first Viscount [1678-1751].
The Works.
London: David Mallet, 1754..
5 Volumes. 4to. An attractive set in contemporary mottled calf, neatly rebacked, spines gilt (occasional foxing, 1 leaf in Vol. I browned, some browning to title margins). First Collected Edition of the works of the prominent Tory politician and philosopher who became a major political propagandist in opposition to the Whig Party led by Sir Robert Walpole. "In the late 20th century, Bolingbroke was rediscovered by historians as a major on Voltaire, and on the American patriots John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. Adams said that he had read all of Bolingbroke's works at least five times; indeed, Bolinbroke's works were widely read in the American colonies, where they helped provide the foundation for the emerging nation's devotion to republicanism. His vision of history as cycles of birth, growth, decline and death of republic was influential in the colonies, as was his contention on liberty; that one is "free not from the law, but by the law."
