Second Edition (published the same year as the first). An account of the Prince of Wales' Egyptian tour of 1869, the primary aim of which was to inspect the Suez Canal, then nearing completion. The royal party which included African explorer Sir Samuel Baker, naturalist Richard Owen, and engineer Sir John Fowler, undertook a voyage up the Nile to Cairo before proceeding to Ismailia to visit the canal waterworks. Here they were attended by engineer M. de Lesseps and greeted by the Khedive, who invited Baker to take command of an expedition against the slavers on the White Nile. On the return journey from Alexandria, the Prince visited Constantinople, the Crimean battlefields, and Athens. Russell was a journalist and war correspondent attached to the Times. cfBlackmer 1462.

A nice tight copy in original cloth (a few marks to cloth). First American Edition of the German botanist's account of his important scientific expedition to the interior of Sudan and the Congo in 1868-71, with which he was entrusted by the Humboldt-Stiflung of Berlin. Starting at Khartoum, he ascended the White Nile to Bahr-el-Ghazal, then with a partly of ivory dealers, proceeded through the regions inhabited by the Diur (Dyoor), Dinka, Bongo and Niam-Niam. He next entered the country of the Mangbettu (Monbuttu), and discovered the Uele (Welle) River on March 19, 1870, which he incorrectly believed to belong to the Chad system - years later it was proven to connect to the Congo. Schweinfürth added considerably to the knowledge of the flora, fauna, and tribes of Central Africa. He provided details respecting the cannibalistic practices of the Mangbettu, and discovered the pygmy Akka tribe. cfGay 2568.
