First American Edition of the German botanist's account of his important scientific expedition to the interior of Sudan and the Congo in 1868-71, with which he was entrusted by the Humboldt-Stiflung of Berlin. Starting at Khartoum, he ascended the White Nile to Bahr-el-Ghazal, then with a partly of ivory dealers, proceeded through the regions inhabited by the Diur (Dyoor), Dinka, Bongo and Niam-Niam. He next entered the country of the Mangbettu (Monbuttu), and discovered the Uele (Welle) River on March 19, 1870, which he incorrectly believed to belong to the Chad system - years later it was proven to connect to the Congo. Schweinfürth added considerably to the knowledge of the flora, fauna, and tribes of Central Africa. He provided details respecting the cannibalistic practices of the Mangbettu, and discovered the pygmy Akka tribe. cfGay 2568.
