WELLS, W[illiam] B[enjamin] [1809-1881].
Canadiana: Containing Sketches Of Upper Canada And The Crisis In Its Political Affairs.
London: Printed For The Author By C. and W.Reynell, 1837..
2 Parts in 1 [Part II with separate title, but pagination continuous]. 8vo. pp. 84; [85]-202. Uncut in original plain blue wrs. (spine defective - removed from a bound volume, light spotting to outer leaves, lower portion of back wr. wanting). First Edition. Wells, the son of a loyalist who immigrated to Canada from New Hampshire in 1787, studied law in the office of Marshall Spring Bidwell in Kingston. Called to the bar in 1833, he practised law in Prescott and also worked as a journalist. From 1834 to 1836 he represented Grenville in the House of Assembly of Upper Canada, where he soon took an active part in the reform movement. The present work was written while Wells was in England (1836-37), where he had gone to protest the actions of Sir Francis Bond Head and present the demands of the Reformers to the colonial secretary, Lord Glenelg. "Though the book contained inaccuracies and was extreme in its treatment of Head and prominent Tories such as John Strachan, it was a clear and well-argued presentation of the radical Reform programme of the time. It advocated such measures as responsible government, an elected legislative council, control of the clergy reserves, separation of church and state, annulment of the charter of the Canada Company, revision of charter of King's College (Toronto), abolition of primogeniture, adoption of the secret ballot, reform of the land granting system, and a more equitable distribution of public offices. Wells ended with a threat of armed rebellion and the "forced separation" of the British North American colonies, should all other means of reform fail." (DCB) Wells himself did not take an active part in the rebellion of 1837 but fearing arrest, he fled to Ogdensburg, and did not return to Upper Canada until November, 1838. TPL 2125. Casey I 1582. Sabin 102611. Watters p. 746. Not in Lande. DCB XI pp. 913-14.

The discovery in 1866 by a prospector of gold in Madoc township, Hastings County, led to a substantial but short-lived gold rush. WHYMPER, Edward [1840-1911].

London: John Murray, 1892..
8vo. pp. xxiv, [2], 456. with half-title. 4 maps & plans (3 folding). 20 wood-engraved plates & 118 wood-engraved text illus. by Edward Whymper after F.Barnard, A.Corbauld, F.Dadd & others. Stonyhurst gilt-stamped prize binding of contemporary calf, gilt back (extremities rubbed, joints cracked). Second Edition. After many years climbing in the Alps, Whymper decided to organize an expedition to the Andes of Ecuador. His primary purpose was to study altitude sickness and the effect of reduced pressure on the human body. During 1880, he made two ascents of Chimborazo (20,498 feet), also claiming the first ascent, and made first ascents of half a dozen other great peaks ranging in height from 15,000 to 20,000 feet. He spent a night on the summit of Cotopaxi (19,613 feet), and was able to thoroughly study the features of the great volcano. Whymper's great contributions to science and exploration were recognized by the Royal Geographical Society, which in 1892 conferred on Whymper one of their Royal Medals "in recognition of the fact that, apart from his mountaineering exploits, 'he had largely corrected and added to our geographical and physical knowledge of the mountain systems of Ecuador, fixed the position of all the great Ecuadorian mountains, produced a map constructed from original theodolite observations extending over 250 miles, and ascertained seventy altitudes by means of three mercurial barometers." (DNB) Whymper also brought back important collections of rock specimens, volcanic dusts, and natural history specimens. He devised a popular form of tent which bears his name, and was able to suggest improvements in aneroid barometers. As usual this copy is without the separately published supplementary volume of scientific observations. Neate 899.
