London: Printed for W.Rogers, 1691..
small 4to. pp. 6 p.l.(incl. imprimatur leaf), 66. modern wrs. few ms. notes in contemporary hand. First Edition. Sherlock wrote strongly against popery throughout the reign of James, despite upholding the doctrine of passive obedience. During the Revolution he went first with the non-jurors, but a year later took the oath. In the preface to the present work Sherlock's gives his own account of his reasons for taking the oath, "that his eyes were opened by the doctrine laid down in canon xxviii. of 'Bishop Overall's Convocation Book', published by Sancroft in the nonjuring interest in January 1690.His point was that this canon showed that the Anglican church recognised a government de facto."
