PORTA, Gio[vanni] Battista Della [1535-1615].
Della Fisonomia Dell'Huomo, Et La Celeste.Libri Sei.
Venice: Heirs of Gio. Battista Combi, 1652..

First published in 1586, Porta's famous treatise was one of the earliest major texts specifically devoted to physiognomy, the art of determining character or personal characteristics from the form or features of the body. The numerous woodcut text illustrations draw comparisons between the physical features of men and animals in an attempt to relate their nature. These comparisons still persist in our vocabulary in adjectives such as bovine, ovine, lupine, aquiline, assinine, porcine, &c. Mortimer suggests that the engravings in this edition were probably copied from the Vicenza woodcuts used by Pietro Paolo Tozzi. cfBib. Osleriana 3714. cfBrunet IV 825-26. cfGarrison & Morton 150. cfWellcome I 5196-5202. See Mortimer, Harvard 16th Century Italian Books, 398 (this edition mentioned in the notes).

Typhus, malaria, epidemic meningitis, dysentery, and other prevalent army diseases are described in detail, and practical rules of military hygiene, now regarded as essential, are laid down. Pringle was also the first to advocate the 'Red Cross' notion of neutrality of military hospitals on the battlefield.
