A fine set in contemporary calf, rebacked preserving spine labels. First Edition. A work of enormous detail based on Orme's years with the East India Company as writer, historiographer and member of the Council of Madras, and still essential today for the depth of its account of the Indian campaigns. The son of a British East India Company physician and surgeon, Orme himself entered the service of the Company in 1743 at the age of fifteen, five years later rising to the position of Factor. As a member of the Madras Council from 1755 to 1758 he played a vigorous part in crushing the French power in the Deccan, and was largely responsible for the appointment of Lord Clive to command the retaking of Calcutta against Suraj-ud-Dowlah. Retiring for health reasons, Orme returned to England in 1759 and began work on his history, the publication of the first volume of which earned him the position of historiographer to the Company. Macauley praises Orme in his essay on Clive as "inferior to no English historian in style and power of painting." Cox I 297.
