LLOYD, William [1627-1717].
A Sermon At The Funeral of Sr Edmund-Bury Godfrey, One of his Majesties Justices of the Peace, Who was Barbarously Murthered. Preached on Thursday the 1st day of October 1678. In the Parish Church of St. Martin in the Fields.
London: Printed by Tho. Newcomb, for Henry Brome, 1678..
4to. pp. 2 p.l., 42. complete with final blank (G2). disbound (first leaves a little stained). First Edition? (one of two published in London the same year). A violently anti-papal sermon preached at the funeral of Lloyd's parishioner, Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey, the justice of the peace to whom Titus Oates made his first depositions concerning the Popish Plot. Shortly thereafter, he was found mysteriously murdered in a ditch on Primrose Hill, sometimes known by its older name of Greenberry Hill. Evidence obtained under torture implicated, on flimsy grounds, three men associated with Somerset House, Green, Berry, and Hill, who were tried, convicted and executed. It seems more likely Oates himself arranged the murder of Godfrey in order to stir up anti-Catholic feeling and give credibility to his dubious assertions. Wing L2700. McAlpin III 774.

A View Of The Evidences Of Christianity.

2 Volumes. 8vo. pp. xii, 362, [2]; vii, 396. contemporary calf (joints cracked, piece chipped from head of Vol. II spine, foxing to outer leaves). Eleventh Edition. "The Evidences Of Christianity is mainly a condensation of Bishop Douglas's Criterion and Lardner's Credibility of the Gospel History. But the task is so judiciously performed that it would probably be difficult to get a more effective statement of the external evidences of Christianity than Paley has here presented. His idea of revelation depends upon the same mechanical conception of the relation of God to the world which dominates his Natural Theology; and he seeks to prove the divine origin of Christianity by isolating it from the general history of mankind, whereas later writers find their chief argument in the continuity of the process of revelation."
