MORGAGNI, G[iovanni] Battista [1682-1771].
De Sedibus, Et Causis Morborum Per Anatomen Indagatis.
Louvain: 'E Typographia Academica', 1766-67..
4 Volumes in 2. 4to. pp. 2 p.l., cxliii, 222; 2 p.l., 310; 1 p.l., 442; 1 p.l., 351. with half-titles. text in double columns. woodcut title vignettes & several tailpieces. contemporary marbled calf, rebacked with original gilt spines mounted, corners renewed (some scattered foxing, paper lightly embrowned - a few gatherings more heavily so). Fourth Edition of the "foundation of modern pathological anatomy". The work was first published in 1761, when Morgagni was seventy-nine years of age. "Vast in scope, it is one of the most fundamentally important works in the history of medicine. In it [Morgagni] reports in precise and exhaustive detail his findings in nearly seven hundred autopsy dissections, introducing and insisting on the concept that diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of disease must be based on an exact understanding of the pathologic changes in the anatomic structures. It put the final rout to the old humoral pathology. Morgagni's contribution to the understanding of disease may well rank with the contributions of Vesalius in anatomy and Harvey in physiology." (Heirs of Hippocrates) "The book includes a number of brilliant descriptions of new diseases, some of which have remained classics until our own day, particularly those of the heart, blood vessels, lungs and throat. He described syphilitic tumours (guminata) in the brain, recorded a case of heart-block (Stokes Adams disease), identified the clinical features of pneumonia with consolidation of the lungs, described lesions in angina pectoris, acute yellow atrophy of the liver, tuberculosis of the kidney etc." (PMM) Blake p. 312. cfBib. In his letter, Munson addresses Neilson as the representative of the Medical Department of the U.S. Army at the War Department Exhibit at the Pan-American Exposition and states that he would be greatly honored if Neilson would attend so that he may show him their new equipment and appliances and enumerate their special advantages. He further states that several medical officers of the U.S. army and navy are contemplating a trip to the camp of mobilization of the Canadian forces during the stay of the Duke of York, and that he hopes to have the pleasure of seeing Neilson there. Munson was one of the surgeons who attended President William McKinley after he was wounded by an assassin in Buffalo, September 6, 1901. While Professor of Military Hygiene at the Army Service School in Washington, in 1912, Munson designed the military field shoe, variously known as the "Munson Last," the "hobnail brogan" of World War I, and the "G.I. shoe" of World War 2. Following his retirement from the army as a brigadier general, he became the first professor of Preventive Medicine at the University of California.

NIGHTINGALE, Florence [1820-1910].
Notes On Nursing: What It Is And What It Is Not.
New York: D.Appleton And Company, 1860..
12mo. pp. 140, [4]ads. A very nice copy in original blind & gilt-stamped cloth (head of spine slightly frayed, some foxing to outer leaves). First American Edition. Nightingale established her reputation as a skillful manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War, where her efforts to improve sanitation, hygiene, nutrition and general living conditions resulted in a drastic reduction in the death rate among wounded soldiers. In 1860 she founded her training school for nurses, following the publication the previous year of the present work, which transformed nursing and health care and served as the standard introduction to the profession. Included here are chapters on ventilation and warming, health in houses, petty management, noise, variety (environment), nutrition, bed and bedding, light, cleanliness of rooms, personal cleanliness, chattering hopes and advices, and observing the sick. "The book was the first of its kind ever to be written. It appeared at a time when the simple rules of health were only beginning to be known, when its topics were of vital importance not only for the well-being and recovery of patients, when hospitals were riddled with infection, when nurses were still mainly regarded as ignorant, uneducated persons. The book has, inevitably, its place in the history of nursing, for it was written by the founder of modern nursing". (Joan Quixley, Intro. to the 1974 edition). cfGarrison & Morton 1612. cfBib. Osleriana 1667. cfWaller 6872.
