Intimately acquainted with Arabic and Arabian customs, he passed as a Syrian christian doctor and merchant. At Rhiad he was suspected and accused of being an English spy, but managed to escape prosecution. '.one of the most fascinating of modern books of travel.' (DNB) Gay 3696.
