"Lady Mary Wortley Montagu's husband was appointed ambassador to the Porte in 1716, and she accompanied him to Constantinople. During her sojourn in Turkey she recorded her observations and experiences in a journal (destroyed after her death) which provided material for her actual letters to her friends, of which only a few survive, and for the series of 52 letters which she composed a few years after her return to England. These are not actual letters, though headed and dated close to the dates of real letters. The form is partly fiction but provides the substance of her life abroad and her opinions on Turkish life and customs.". (Blackmer) The first three editions were published in the same year, 1763. The preface by Mary Astell was written in 1724. Robinson, Wayward Women, pp. 32-34. cfBlackmer 1150. cfCox II p. 229. cfRothschild 1452.

OCKLEY, Simon [1678-1720].
The History Of The Saracens: Containing The Lives Of Abubeker, Omar, Othma.the immediate Successors of Mahomet, Giving An Account of their most remarkable Battles. The Religion, Rites, Customs and Manner of Living of that Warlike People.
London: Printed for R.Knaplock, J.Sprint, R.Smith., 1718..
2 Volumes. 8vo. pp. xxiv, [4], 391, [1]blank, [19]index; 2 p.l., xlviii, [13]incl. list of subscribers, lxxxii-xcv, [1]errata, 387, [1]blank, [10], 19, [21]incl. index. contemporary paneled calf, rebacked retaining spine labels (some light foxing). Second Greatly Enlarged Edition, marking the first appearance of Volume II. The first volume was originally published as The Conquest of Syria, Persia, and Egypt by the Saracens in 1708. The work was based upon a manuscript in the Bodleian Library which was initially ascribed to the Arabic historian El-Wákidi, with additions from other sources. However the manuscript was later proved to be a work of dubious historical accuracy. "But, although many of its details require correction, the importance of Ockley's work in relation to the progress of oriental studies cannot be overestimated. Following in the steps of Pocock's famous Specimen Historiae Arabum, but adopting a popular method, and recommending it by an admirable English style, Ockley for the first time made the history of the early Saracen conquests attractive to the general reader , and stimulated the student to further research. With all its inaccuracies, Ockley's History of the Saracens became a secondary classic, and formed for generations the main source of the average notions of early Mohammedan history. Gibbon did not disdain to use it freely." (DNB) The work earned for Ockley the chair of Arabic at Cambridge in 1711. Graesse V 7-8.
