CONDILLAC, [Étienne Bonnot de, Abbé] [1715-1780].
Le Commerce Et Le Gouvernement, Considérés rélativement l'un à l'autre. Ouvrage Élémentaire.
Amsterdam.Paris: Jombert & Cellot, 1776..
2 Parts in 1. 12mo. pp. 2 p.l., 273; 2 p.l., 180. woodcut ornaments. contemporary mottled sheep, gilt back (bit rubbed, head of spine worn, some light foxing). First Edition? One of three editions or issues published in 1776, the other two with continuous pagination. Kress states that it originally appeared in 1772 but this is almost certainly an error. This is the French philosopher's only economic work, in which he sought to define the principal concepts of value, exchange, and price, and succeeded in constructing a utility theory of value. It has been described by Jevons as "original and profound" and by H.D.Macleod as "infinitely superior to A.Smith". Schumpeter felt their praise to be exaggerated, but states that it "is a good if somewhat sketchy treatise on economic theory and policy and much above the common run of its contemporaries". Einaudi 1209. Goldsmiths' 11373. cfCioranescu 20318. cfKress 7200-01. cfStourm pp. 119-20. cfTchemerzine II p. 482. Coquelin & Guillaumin I p. 456. Palgrave I p. 385. Roll pp. 317-20. [CONDORCET, Marie Jean Antoine Nicolas Caritat, Marquis De] [1743-1794].
Vie De M. Turgot.
London [ie. Paris]: 1786..
8vo. pp. 3 p.l., 246. old half calf, rebacked. One of several issues with identical imprint, this one being Gerits' issue 'B'. The present work and Dupont de Nemours' earlier memoir (1782) are the two major contemporary biographies of the great French statesman, economist, and financial reformer. The Life is also important for containing an early contribution to mathematical economics, in a passage where Condorcet discusses the various mathematical ways "in which indirect taxation could be replaced by direct taxation and the effects of such a change". (Theocharis, Early Development in Maathematical Economics, p. 65) A.Gerits in Harvard Library Bulletin, 1992-93, Vol. III, No. 4. cfCioranescu 20417. cfEinaudi 1217. cfGoldsmiths' 13128. cfKress B.1031-33.
