The Battle of Navarino, the last naval battle in history to be fought entirely with sailing vessels, took place on 20 October 1827, during the Greek War of Independence (1821-32) in Navarino Bay, on the west coast of the Peloponnese peninsula, in the Ionian Sea. Equipped with superior vessels and arms, and better trained crews, the smaller combined English, French and Russian force, commanded by Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Codrington, succeeded in destroying a combined Ottoman, Algerian and Egyptian armada.

First Edition of this encyclopaedic work, the first comprehensive naval history. Morisot's Orbis Maritimi is divided into two parts, the first devoted to classical antiquity and the Orient, the second to mediaeval and renaissance Europe, enumerating the exploits and explorations of the British, French, Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese. America, from New France and Labrador south to Brazil and Tierra del Fuego, and the voyages and discoveries of Columbus, Cartier, Cortoreal, Verrazano, Raleigh, Le Moyne, Magellan, and others, are described on pp. 480-83, 507-11, and 592 to 612. Concluding the volume is a section devoted to various types of sailing vessels, including galleys, canoes, and sampans. These ships are illustrated by a series of eleven fine text engravings. The single folding plate portrays a regatta of ancient times while the remaining text illustrations depict numismatic items of naval interest. Among the twenty-three engraved half-page maps are three specifically of America. This is a later issue of the first edition, with four-page dedication to Louis XIII (dated January 1643) replaced by a two-page dedication to Pierre Seguier, Chancellor of France (dated April 1643). Experimental squadrons were trials conducted of the sea-worthiness and performance of sailing vessels in various types of seas and winds which often led to improvements or alterations in ship design. The Columbine, an 18-gun corvette constructed by Sir William Symonds [1782-1856] by the end of 1825, "proved a decided success during the experimental cruise of 1827" (DNB). As surveyor of the navy from 1832 to 1847 Symonds built over 200 ships and introduced important innovations in ship design including elliptical sterns. In 1836 he was knighted for his services.
