The use of cotton wool was first suggested to him by reading Mathias Mayor's La Chirurgerie Simplifiée, Brussels, 1842; but its improved manufacture in an antiseptic condition was largely due to his suggestions." 1762, 8vo. pp. xii, 316. contemporary sprinkled calf. Second Edition. In 1768 Home was appointed the first professor of material medica at the University of Edinburgh, a position he held until 1798. As one of the clinical professors of medicine at the infirmary he experimented on the actions of several new drugs which he introduced into practice. He also called attention to croup as a distinct disease and vaccinated children against measles, achieving some immunity (see Garrison & Morton 5442). The present book on diseases and their treatment, first published in 1758, was highly regarded in his day and was used to a certain extent as a text-book on the continent.
