HAMILTON, William [1755-1797].
Letters Concerning The Northern Coast Of The County Of Antrim. Containing A Natural History Of Its Basaltes: With An Account Of Such Circumstances As Are Worthy Of Notice Respecting The Antiquities, Manners And Customs Of That Country.

8vo. pp. viii, 195. folding engraved map (frontis.) of Antrim County & 3 engraved plates (1 folded). contemporary sprinkled calf, rebacked. First Edition of the principal work of the Irish naturalist and antiquary. This book is said to have attracted much attention at the time, and a German translation by L.Crelle was published at Leipzig the following year. The letters give a general sketch of the northern coast, an account of the island of Raghery, a description of Ballycastle with remarks on the state of its manufactories and collieries, an account of the fishery, a history of the Giant's Causeway and a description and analysis of the columnar basaltes as well as a discussion of the volcanic theory of the rocks. Research indicates that the plates were first added in the second edition of 1790. They depict the Basaltic Island of Caraig a Ramhad, an eastern view of Cape Pleaskin in the Promontory of Bengore, and a view of Casan An Fhir Leith or the gray man's path in the Promontory of Fairhead.
