HASTINGS, Warren [1732-1818] [Governor-General of India (1773-1785), impeached on grounds of corruption and cruelty]. Autograph Letter, Signed, dated March 22, 1803, to George Payne. Writing to say that despite reports that Mrs. Hastings has been seriously ill, she has in fact been in uncommonly good health. [OFFERED WITH:]. 2 Engraved portraits of Hastings, one by T.Bromley dated 1797 (size of sheet: 31.7 x 21.6 cm.), the other by T.Knight after a painting by Joshua Reynolds (25.75 x 16.8 cm.), and an engraved ticket of admission (21 x 16 cm.; plate measuring 16.25 x 10.7 cm.) to the 62nd day of Hastings' trial, signed by [Charles Stanhope, third Earl] Stanhope [1753-1816] [Politician], with wax seal (ticket with upper left-hand corner clipped & with short tear along 1 plate mark). Hastings was famously impeached in the House of Commons in 1787 on charges of personal corruption and high crimes and misdemeanours relating to his term as Governor in India. The trial, which lasted for a total of 145 days over a period of seven years and three months, cost Hastings £70,000, and almost bankrupted him. In April of 1795 he was acquitted of all charges, and in 1814 he was made a Privy Councillor.

Manuscript Letter, Signed, dated Bryanstone Square, June 28, 1842, to the Master of Dulwich College. A plea for the granting of two or three days a week free admission to the public to view the art collection at the College. The oldest public art gallery in England, it was founded in the early seventeenth century by actor and philanthropist Edward Alleyn as part of Alleyn's College of God's Gift. The Dulwich Art Gallery houses one of the country's finest collections of Old Masters, especially rich in French, Italian and Spanish Baroque paintings and in British portraits from Tudor times to the 19th century. "...the formation of the National Gallery and theIr facilities have clearly proved that the people of this country, as much as any people in the world, are alive to the influence and objects of art and intellectual interests and their excellent conduct at all those exhibitions has called forth the unanimous applause of the officers and attendants of the various places of exhibition...I request your perusal of the Evidence of Colonel Rowan, Chief Commissioner of Police before the Select Committee...I send you a copy of the Report of the late Select Committee...on National Monuments; and also of several reports...which contain a statement of the very beneficial results of the increased liberality in the free admission of the Public at the British Museum National Gallery Hampton Court East India Museum...it is my intention early in the ensuing month to call the attention of the House of Commons to the Report of 1841, and I shall be pleased to be able to notice your concurrence in the recommendations therein offered...".

The grantee, George Chisholm, was a United Empire Loyalist who was settled in the Township of Flamborough East, near Hamilton. His son, William Chisholm, became a prominent Upper Canada politician and businessman who founded the town of Oakville.

JAPANESE CANADIAN INTERNMENT.
Collection of 9 typed and manuscript letters and original documents, most relating to the internment during World War II of Eitaro Aida originally of Cumberland, B.C.

Aida was born in Japan in 1880 and first came to Canada in 1907, living in Cumberland, Vancouver, and again in Cumberland where he owned four properties including a tailor shop, until he was evacuated in April, 1942. He stayed at Hastings Park for five months before being moved the interior housing centre of New Denver in the Kootenays. There he remained in detention for four years until he was released and able to relocate to Toronto. Aida was one of some 21,000 Japanese Canadians living in British Columbia detained and dispossessed under the War Measures Act following the attack on Pearl Harbour. The papers document the seizure and forced sale of Aida's properties and personal possessions at auction, all itemized with prices realized, in four typed letters, dating from 1945 to 1948, from the Canadian Department Of The Secretary of State, Office of the Custodian, Japanese Evacuation Section in Vancouver, B.C. Also included here are Aida's 1911 Japanese Passport, his 1947 request for compensation, his 1949 application for naturalization papers, and his 1951 Certificate of Canadian Citizenship.
