[WILKES, John] [1727-1797].
The North Briton.
London: Printed for J.Williams, 1763..
2 (of 3) Volumes. small 8vo. pp. 2 p.l., 222; 241, [1]blank, [5]index. early 19th century half calf, gilt backs (rubbed, light foxing to outer leaves). ownership entries of E. Delaval, possibly Edward Delaval [1729-1814], British scholar and scientist and winner of the Copley Medal, and Geo. Paton, Lincoln's Inn, 1845. First Collected Edition of this radical newspaper, comprising numbers 1-45; a third volume containing number 46 and related material was also issued but is more difficult to obtain. The North Briton was intended as a rejoinder to the pro-government periodical The Briton begun by Tobias Smollett. The 45th number is especially famous for containing an attack on King George III's speech endorsing the Paris Peace Treaty of 1763 which ended the Seven Years' War. Wilkes was charged with seditious libel and imprisoned in the Tower of London but successfully challenged the warrant for his arrest and seizure of the paper on grounds of privilege as a member of parliament. The case roused the public and provoked loud popular chants of 'Wilkes and Liberty' in favour of freedom of speech.
