I do not know how it is, but I have always had an immense admiration for any man who could write verses easily. Perhaps it is because I absolutely lack in the faculty myself. "Your kind and sympathetic letter places me under additional obligations to you. I have received from you many kind expressions of esteem and regard since I have been in public life, but none of them have touched me more than your present letter. It is a source of much satisfaction to know that my friends think well of me though I have laid down the responsibility of public life. My doctors tell me that a perfectly quiet life while it will not restore my health entirely will do much good and I hope their diagnosis and predictions will be justified by events. Mr. Ross is so well known that I need say nothing about him. I was fortunate to be able to leave the Premiership in such good hands."
