A nice copy of this classic instructional text on field fortification. Author Clairac, French historian and engineer, served with distinction in the campaigns in Flanders, was wounded at the siege of Philipsbourg, and obtained in 1748 the military rank of brigadier. Printed from the original manuscript in the handwriting of Cockburn's private secretary, which had come into the possession of J.S.Brookhouse of Salem, MA. The first UK edition of Cockburn's diary was not published until 1888. Rear-Admiral Cockburn was tasked with conveying Napoleon to Saint Helena on board the Northumberland in 1815. He remained for some months as governor of the island and Commander-in-Chief of the Cape of Good Hope Station.

The fine large folding engraved map of Flanders, which is on sturdy paper, is dated 1700 and was apparently issued and sold separately that year (a note on the map indicates that it was available for sale from C.Browne at the Globe.

The 78th Highlanders, which was raised in 1793 by Francis Humberstone MacKenzie, served in the Napoleonic Wars (defence of Nijmegen, 1794, Battle of Maida, 1806 and the Alexandria expedition, 1807), India and Pakistan (Battle of Assaye, 1803 during the Second Anglo-Maratha War, First Anglo-Afghan War, 1842, Battle of Khushab in the Anglo-Persian War, 1857, suppression of the Indian Mutiny in 1857, re-capture of Cawnpore, reinforcement of Lucknow). The regiment won eight Victoria Crosses during the last campaign and its role at Lucknow was commemorated by poets John Greenleaf Whittier and Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

In 1855 Major Delafield of the American Corps of Engineers was appointed to form a commission to visit the Crimea and the theatre of war in Europe for the purpose of gathering information regarding various aspects of their military systems: the organization of armies, furnishing and distributing supplies, medical and hospital arrangements, kinds of arms, ammuniition and equipment , including the Lancaster gun and rifle cannon, the construction of fortifications, methods of transportation, &c. The plates include numerous lithographed views of Sebastopol and fortifications there, the military hospital at St. Petersburg, the Turkish Barrack at Scutari, used by the English Army as their general depot hospital, and as a residence by Florence Nightingale, folding plans of fortifcations in Paris, Cherbourg, Sebastopol, Constadt, and other cities, and plates showing weapons, hospitals, batteries, storehouses, military structures, &.

Denison, lawyer, senior police magistrate of Toronto (1877-1923), and prominent figure in the Canada First and Imperial Federation Movements, succeeded his father in the command of the Toronto cavalry; this militia unit, Denison's Horse (renamed the Governor General's Body Guard), was raised by his grandfather in 1839. He saw active service in the Fenian Raids of 1866 and in the Northwest Rebellion in 1885, and wrote two important works on military subjects, Modern Cavalry and A History of Cavalry. The latter study, which includes chapters on the revolutionary wars of America and France and the American Civil War, was awarded a cash prize offered by the Russian government for the best history of cavalry. Although it received mixed reviews on publication, "it has since been hailed as the definitive work in its field" (Norman Knowles, DCB XV p. 272).
