STEPHEN, James [1758-1832].
The Slavery Of The British West India Colonies Delineated, As It Exists Both In Law And Practice, And Compared With The Slavery Of Other Countries, Antient And Modern.
London: Printed For Joseph Butterworth And Son, 1824 & London: Printed For Saunders And Benning. And J.Hatchard And Son, 1830.
2 Volumes. 8vo. pp. 2 p.l., lxxv, 480; 1 p.l., xliv [ie. xlii], 452. Vol. I with half-title; Vol. II with tipped-in errata slip. Uncut in original bds., rebacked, the first vol. with remains of chipped label mounted, the second with most of chipped spine & label mounted (small repair in blank portion of both titles, scattered light foxing). First Edition of "one of the classics of emancipationist literature." (Ragatz) Stephen, an English lawyer, had lived and practised his profession on the island of St. Christopher's in the West Indies for eleven years, from 1783 to 1794. Impressed by the iniquities and brutalities that he witnessed first hand, he thereafter took a prominent role in the agitation for the abolition of slavery. He became an intimate friend of William Wilberforce, and in 1800 married Wilberforce's sister. Stephen "may be regarded as one of the ablest legal advocates of the anti-slavery group. The publication of his most famous work, The Slavery Of The British West India Colonies Delineated.extended over six years. The title exactly describes the work. Vol. I. treats of the legal status of the West India slave, showing how he or she was debarred from giving legal evidence, bereft of the right of self-defence, and shamefully neglected in education. The volume closes with an account of the different kinds of enfranchisement and manumission. Vol. II. treats of agricultural labour in the torrid zone, and the pernicious effect of its excess when forcibly exacted, with the consequent decline of population among the predial slaves on sugar estates. Chap. iv. exposes the barbarities practised on these plantations in excess of labour exacted under the lash, both as to time and actual physical exertion. Not only is the feeding, clothing, and housing of the negroes bad to the last degree, but they are even treated harshly when sick. Instances are quoted of ill-treatment, resulting in the slave's death. Chap. viii. concludes the work. Slavery is shewn to be a disgrace to Great Britain. The author quotes Mr. Pitt's view of compensation, and makes an urgent appeal to parliament to "undo the heavy burthen and let the oppressed go free." (Alice Law, in Palgrave) Cundall 21590. Goldsmiths' 24338. Palgrave p. 474. Ragatz p. 556. Sabin 91243.

STIRLING, Patrick James [1809-1891].
The Philosophy Of Trade; Or, Outlines Of A Theory Of Profits And Prices, Including An Examination Of The Principles Which Determine Relative Value Of Corn, Labour, And Currency.
Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd & London: Simpkin, Marshall, & Co. 1846..
8vo. pp. xxviii, 380. with half-title. Untrimmed in original blind-stamped cloth, printed paper spine label (spine dull). First Edition. "The Philosophy of Trade treats, in a highly abstract way, of value, labour, profits, rent, foreign trade, the chief contention being, in opposition to Ricardo, that value depends solely on the relation of demand and supply. It purports to describe in outline the laws which would regulate the operations of trade in its healthy and unfettered state, assuming freedom from external interference of every kind, even from taxes for revenue." (Palgrave) The work was highly praised by Thomas Chalmers as "something far higher than an exposition: it is a rectification of first principles." (N.B. Review, Nov. 1846) Goldsmiths' 34541. Kress C.6975. Palgrave III p. 477. cfEinaudi 5484.

Collection of reports and official documents read at the second to fourth congresses of the International Working Men's Association (First International), held at Lausanne in 1867, Brussels in 1868, and Basel in 1869. The association was founded in London in 1864 and the first congress was held in Geneva in 1866. Karl Marx drew up the programme and prepared the statutes of the organization, whose purpose was to improvement of working conditions, the reduction of the work day, the abolition of child labour, free education, and the eventual definitive emancipation of the working class. Dissensions within its ranks chiefly between the centralist democratic socialists and the anarchists led by Bakunin, who joined in 1869, eventually culminated in the expulsion of the latter in 1872 and the gradual collapse of the association.

THORNTON, Henry [1760-1815].
An Enquiry Into The Nature And Effects of The Paper Credit Of Great Britain.
London: Printed For J.Hatchard.F. And C.Rivington., 1802..
8vo. pp. 1 p.l., [v]-xii, [13]-320. lacking half-title? 19th century half roan (rubbed, occasional spotting). First Edition. An extremely important work which confirmed Thornton's reputation as a financier. It was partly written as a defence of the policy of the Bank of England, of which Thornton was a director and governor. J.S.Mill, in his Political Economy, called it the clearest exposition known to him in English of the subject with which it deals. 'It is not too much to say that the appearance of Paper Credit in 1802 marks the beginning of a new epoch in monetary theory. Although Thornton's merits have long been overshadowed by the greater fame of Ricardo, it has now come to be recognised that in the field of money the main achievement of the classical period is due to Thornton.'. (Hayek, Intro to the 1939 edition) 'The greatest work of the nineteenth century on monetary theory.' (Blaug, Great Economists Before Keynes, p. 242) Einaudi 5617. Goldsmiths' 18526. Kress B.4612.
