"One of the most famous and most popular captivity narratives.As a powerful picture of Indian cruelty, [it] ranks next to the Rowlandson captivity narrative, published in 1682." (Howes) The Reverend Williams, in charge of the church at Greenfield when it was attacked by Indians in 1703, was carried off to Canada along with his family and other members of the community, his wife and two of his children being tomahawked along the way.
