TUPPER, Ferdinand Brock (Editor).
The Life And Correspondence Of Major-General Sir Isaac Brock, K.B. Second Edition, Considerably Enlarged.
London: Simpkin, Marshall & Co., 1847..
12mo. pp. x, 492. lacking pp. xi-xii (last contents leaf). new half calf over old cloth bds., spine label preserved (stains on pp. 280-81). Second Enlarged Edition. A valuable source of information on the early events of the War of 1812, and on the opinions, intentions and actions of the man who is considered to have been "the heart and soul of the defence of Upper Canada" in the early months of the war." (Wallace) Brock came to Canada in 1802 as lieutenant-colonel of the 49th regiment. Promoted colonel in 1805, and major-general in 1811, he was then appointed president and administrator of Upper Canada just before the outbreak of hostilities. His brilliant capture of Detroit on August of 1812 earned him a knighthood, but he died in action at the Battle of Queenston Heights before the news could reach him. In the preface, the editor regrets that in his desire for absolute candour and truth, he "must necessarily give pain to the relatives of the late Sir George Prevost, of whose military government in Canada he would much rather have written in praise than in censure." The work is interspersed with notices of the celebrated First Nations Chief, Tecumseh, and also contains brief memoirs of Brock's brother, Daniel De Lisle Brock, bailiff and chief magistrate of Guernsey, and his two nephews, Lieutenant E.W.Tupper, R.N., And Colonel W. De Vic Tupper. The new material in this second edition amounts to about one third of the text of the first, and includes additional letters written by Brock. Howes T-415. Sabin 8152. TPL 925. cfGagnon I 3589 & cfMorgan p. 49 (1st Edn. of 1845).
