TATTERSALL, George [1817-1849].
Sporting Architecture.
London: R.Ackermann, Sept. 29, 1841..
4to. pp. vi, 97, [1]. engraved title, 19 engraved plates (incl. frontis.; counted as 22 in plate list, i.e. 3 plates with 2 illus. each), 3 engraved text illus. & 17 wood-engraved text illus., by Tattersall & others. original blind & gilt-stamped cloth, rebacked with spine mounted (extremities frayed, some browning & heavy foxing to frontis. & title, some other lighter scattered foxing, 1st tissue guard torn). First Edition of what is probably the earliest book on the subject, by sporting architect, illustrator, and author, George Tattersall. The work contains extensive discussion, with illustrations, mostly by Tattersall himself, of appropriate designs and conditions for building stud farms, animal stalls, and kennels. The section on race stands contains a new design for a grandstand with a circular front. The author was the grandson of Richard Tattersall, founder of the famous London horse auction house. As an architect, he specialized in building stables, stud farms, and kennels for prominent sportsmen, Tattersall's extensive stables at Willesden being one of his projects. Tattersall also provided illustrations for Apperley's Hunting Reminiscences (1843), and wrote or edited, usually under the pseudonym 'Wildrake', a number of sporting books and periodicals, including the New Sporting Almanack (1844-45) and the Sporting Magazine (1844-45). Podeschi 165 (incorrect illus. count). Slater p. 113. cfHigginson Smith p. 433. cfHuth p. 145.
