Second and Best Edition, with an added third volume, of one of the most celebrated critical commentaries on an ancient text ever written. This massive commentary is devoted to an elucidation of the portions of Pliny's Natural History contained in Solinus' third-century geographical compendium and description of the social, religious, historical, and scientific aspects of the ancient world, the Collectanea Rerum Memorabilium, later revised under the title Polyhistor. It is commonly regarded as the magnum opus of French classical scholar Claude de Saumaise (Salmasius), who succeeded Scaliger as honorary professor at Leyden in 1631. Saumaise was the first to reveal Solinus' extensive debt to Pliny and his Exercitationes, originally published in two volumes at Paris in 1629, won the highest admiration of contemporary scholars. It is still considered to be an indispensable study and a monument of erudition and learning. In the present edition a whole new third part, totaling over three hundred pages, was added from unpublished manuscripts found after Saumaise's death. This third volume, entitled Exercitationes de Homonymis Hyles Iatricae, deals with the botanical nomenclature of medicinal plants, with an appended essay on the identification and etymology of manna and saccarum. Brunet V 92-93 ("Ouvrage estimé."). Clark VI 38. Pritzel 8045. cfSarton I 341.
