First Editions of the French Translations of Stavorinus' accounts of his two voyages made in the service of the Dutch East India Company, the first in 1768-71, the second in 1774-78. The works contain interesting observations on the Dutch possessions in the East Indies, India, and South Africa, and provide a particularly accurate description of the Cape Colony and its inhabitants. While at Batavia, Stavorinus noted the arrival from Tahiti in 1770 of Captain Cook in the Endeavour. Stavorinus' narratives were originally published in Dutch in 1793 and 1797.
