The Second Lyon Edition, with false Amsterdam address of Néaulme. A classic in educational theory, Émile is also, as Rousseau himself points out, a philosophical treatise on the goodness of human nature. The work seeks to follow the natural unfolding of a young man raised in rural isolation, unsubjected to the corrupting influences of society. Rousseau's radical ideas, especially his proposal to substitute sentimental deism for the dogma of revealed religion, aroused the wrath of ecclesiastical and civil authorities; the book was condemned, and Rousseau, threatened with arrest, fled the country. A fine copy in contemporary mottled calf (almost imperceptible repair to head of spine, wormhole in lower blank margin of first few leaves). First Edition. Forced to flee France following the official condemnation of Émile, Rousseau sought refuge in Neuchâtel under protection of the King of Prussia. The Council of Geneva soon took a similar stand after Rousseau published a reply to an attack by the Archbishop of Paris, Lettre à M. de Beaumont (1763). Rousseau countered by first solemnly renouncing his citizenship and then, in the present work, written in direct response to Tronchin's Lettres Écrites de la campagne, bitterly attacking the Council and the Genevan constitution. In 1765 he quit Neuchâtel for England at the invitation of philosopher David Hume. Dufour 232. Tchemerzine X p. 50.
