Second Edition in Latin and the First Edition to be Edited by Johannes Buxtorf the Younger [1599-1664]. "A valuable repertory of information regarding the opinions and ceremonies of the Jews" (Encyc. Brit., 11th Edn.), compiled by the celebrated German Hebrew and Rabbinic scholar Joannes Buxtorf, professor of Hebrew at the University of Basel. Buxtorf's knowledge and scholarship were so highly regarded by his contemporaries that he was frequently consulted by Jews themselves on maters relating to their ceremonial law. The present work was first published in German in 1603, followed by an expanded Latin version the following year. Buxtof also published Manuale Hebraicum et Chaldaicum (1602), Lexicon Hebraicum et Chaldaicum (1607), and Biblia Hebraica (1618). His two most important works, the Lexicon Chaldaicum, Talmudicum, et Rabbinicum and the Concordantiae Bibliorum Hebraicorum, were left unfinished at the time of his death, and were posthumously edited for publication by his son.

Late Vilnius printing of this classic Rabbinic code, a digest of the larger Beth Yoseph, which Caro considered to be his greatest work. Rabbi Caro, a Spanish exile who removed first to Nicopoli, Bulgaria and then to Adrianople, where he acted for a long time as head of an academy, eventually settled in Safed, Palestine. (See Waxman, A History of Jewish Literature, II pp. 144ff).
