"[D'Aguesseau] was one of the most distinguished chancellors who flourished under the French system of parlements.As a magistrate he banished corruption from the tribunals; he was responsible for improving the forms and uniformity of procedure; he was influential in ascertaining more accurately jurisdictional limits. It was, however, through his 'grandes ordonnances' that he left his most permanent marks upon French jurisprudence. He took up in detail the great draft of Lamoignon.[and] is said to have written in advance entire chapters fo the future 'Code Napoléon'. the most important of the ordonnances which he drafted may be said to be those on gifts (1731), wills (1735) and entails (1747).
