A collection of critical essays and two letters written on James Joyce's Finnegans Wake, then in the process of being discretely published in sections as Work in Progress. Some of the quoted text was never incorporated into the finished novel, which finally appeared in 1939. Contributors included Samuel Beckett, Marcel Brion, Frank Budgen, Stuart Gilbert, Eugene Jolas, Victor Llona, Robert McAlmon, Thomas McGreevy, Elliot Paul, John Rodker, Robert Sage, and William Carlos Williams. Beckett's essay is his first appearance in print. For some time Joyce was suspected as the author of the two letters.

The plates include folding plans of Belfast in 1660, 1685, 1790 (facsimile), Sir William Petty's map of the Barony of Belfast (facsimile), plan of the harbour of Belfast with a sketch of the proposed improvements in 1785, and a plan of the volunteer attack and defence of Belfast in July, 1781. The pedigree is of the Chichester family.

First Edition. Scarce: 1 copy cited in Worldcat. A greatly expanded version of the author's account of the parish of Belfast which won a faculty prize at the Belfast Academical Institution in 1819. It was issued anonymously when Benn was only 22 years of age. "For so young a writer it was a work of uncommon judgment and research, exceedingly well written, with an eye for scenery and a taste for economics as well as for antiquities. It is not superseded by Benn's later and larger labours." (DNB)
