8vo. pp. 1 p.l., vi, [24], 384, [24]index. contemporary calf, rebacked preserving endpapers with ownership entries of Mary Beard dated 1806, Mrs. Joseph Green, dated 1836 & 2 others (some light browning). Early edition, published the year of the author's death, of this famous English cookery book. The popularity enjoyed by Glasse's work was not surpassed until the appearance of Mrs. Beeton's cookbook in the middle of the following century. Mclean records thirty-six editions published between the first of 1747 and 1800. The 'appendix' of one hundred and fifty new recipes introduced by the publisher Millar in the 1758 edition, is notable for its Jewish dishes. Other interesting inclusions are instructions for preserving tripe 'to go to the East Indies', cures for rabies (borrowed from Dr. Mead) and the plague, and ways of ridding oneself of bugs. Despite the popularity of her book, Glasse went bankrupt in 1754 and was forced to auction copyright to it. In 1757 she was briefly imprisoned for debt in the Marshalsea and then Fleet prison. She went on to publish two further works in 1760, The Servants Directory and The Compleat Confectioner, both of which failed to attain the success of the first. Maclean p. 60. Bitting p. 189.
