The work originally formed part of The States Of Central America., published at New York in 1858. It is here reprinted with the permission of the author, who has also revised three chapters to "give a clear and accurate view of the condition of Honduras at the present time." (p. vi). "Recent events, but more especially the commencement and rapid progress of a great Inter-Oceanic highway through its territories, have invested the Republic of Honduras in Central America with new interest and importance. This important international work, which is under contract to be delivered in 1872, must materially affect the course of travel and trade between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and have a powerful influence in developing the vast natural resources of Central America in general, and of Honduras in particular." (p. [v]) The author was formerly the representative of the United States in the Central American Republics (1849-50), and more recently its Commissioner in Peru (1863-65).
