GESTA STEPHANI, Regis Anglorum, Et Ducis Normannorum, Incerto Auctore.
London: 'Sumptibus Societatis', 1846..
8vo. pp. xv, 139. with half-title. title in red & black with vignette. contemporary half morocco. The Gesta Stephani was originally printed by André Duchesne in his collection of Norman authors, published in Paris in 1619, and apparently transcribed from an ancient manuscript in the custody of the bishop of Laon. The work is here re-edited and preceded by an interesting preface by Richard Clarke Sewell. The authorship of the chronicle is uncertain, but it appears to have been written by an Ecclesiastic, a contemporary and partisan of King Stephen, and covers a period in English history, of which perhaps less is known than any other after the Norman invasion.

JOHN BULL. "For God, The King, And The People." Vol. I. From December 17, 1820 to December 31, 1821. [Edited by Theodore Hooke].

John Bull was founded to counteract the popular enthusiasm for Queen Caroline and Hook obtained the editorship of the paper at the suggestion of Sir Walter Scott. "Hook's reckless humour and preternatural faculty for improvisation now had full swing, and his powers were never displayed to so much advantage as in this scurrilous, scandalous, but irresistibly facetious, and for a time exceedingly potent journal...He undoubtedly proved himself the prince of lampooners...he hurls ridicule and invective right and left with a Titanic vigour so admirable in itself as a manifestation of energy that we almost forget that after all it is only mud that he is showering. Most of it, however, stuck where it was meant to stick, and his disreputable paper must be named with the Craftsman and the North Briton among those which have contributed to mould English history."
