[WITH:] GOURLAY, Robert [Fleming]. General Introduction To Statistical Account Of Upper Canada, Compiled With A View To A Grand System Of Emigration, In Connexion With A Reform Of The Poor Laws. 8vo. pp. 1 p.l., [v]-xii, div, 47. lacking half-title. folding engraved map (frontis.). bound uniformly with the Statistical Account. London: Simpkin & Marshall, & J.M.Richardson, 1822.

First Editions. A Scottish agrarian radical, Gourlay emigrated to Kingston, Upper Canada, in 1817. There he began his statistical investigations into the capabilities of the province with a view to preparing a guide for the prospective emigrant. He accordingly devised and distributed a questionnaire to the resident landowners of Upper Canada, inviting them to state their opinions on the major existing hindrances to the development and improvement of their townships. The response was unified and clear: the major grievances centred on the crown and Clergy Reserves, the lack of emigration policy and the exclusion of American settlers. Gourlay began to agitate for reform, urging Canadians to seek redress and petition the British government to conduct an official inquiry. Alarmed by Gourlay's popularity, the authorities arrested him three times; twice he was tried for seditious libel and acquitted; the third time he was finally convicted under the long dormant Alien Act of 1804, and banished from Upper Canada. Lengthy imprisonment broke his spirit and health and for the rest of his life he was subject to attacks of insanity.

His Statistical Account, "the chief monument to [his] stay in Upper Canada" (DCB), is the most informative compilation of information on the progress of settlement there at the time. "Though Gourlay made no attempt to analyse them, the 57 township reports he printed present an unrivalled picture of provincial social and economic life." (DCB) The supplementary volume (General Introduction...), separately published the same year, provides a lengthy and detailed account of Gourlay's experiences and treatment in Upper Canada, and includes the text of many of his letters and addresses, 1817-22.

First Edition. An important contemporary record of the 1837 Rebellion, of the background and grievances which led up to it, and of the reprisals which followed, including an account of the organization of the patriot army in Ohio and New York for the invasion of Canada. The author, a veteran of the War of 1812, and publisher of the reform newspaper, the 'Grenville Gazette', fled to the United States shortly after the outbreak of the Rebellion and became a senior officer in the Patriot army. McLeod was a dedicated supporter of the idea of Canadian independence: "Canada must be free!.. We fervently cherish the hope, that the day is not far distant when the Eagle of Liberty shall soar triumphant over this vast continent, - when a vestige of tyranny will not remain, and that the step towards this glorious consummation, will be the liberation of Canada."      An early gazetteer of Upper Canada, by an American Baptist minister, who emigrated to the Niagara region in 1808. He received permission from Lieutenant-Governor Gore, to prepare and publish the work, but on the outbreak of the war in 1812, he returned to the States. Although his manuscript was confiscated, part of it had already been sent to an American printer, and Smith succeeded in reconstructing the rest of the work from his notes. It provides an interesting American view of social and political conditions in Upper Canada in the war years, 1812-14; Smith felt that Canada would willingly surrender to the American army. In this edition, the history of the war has been brought down to October 21, 1813.

Second Edition. First published in 1799, this was the earliest published topographical description of the young province of Upper Canada, prepared by its first surveyor-general. Smith, who had originally come to Upper Canada in 1792, serving as a quartermaster in a British regiment stationed at Niagara, was appointed to the position of surveyor-general of the province in 1793 by Governor-General Simcoe. The advertisement following the title states that the notes and gazetteer were drawn up at Simcoe’s request to illustrate a separately published map of the colony, and that this second edition was revised, corrected and updated by Lieutenant-Governor Francis Gore to accompany a new map compiled in the surveyor-general’s office, and recently published under his direction.

First Edition. The charming oval lithographs, measuring 8 3/8” by 11 5/8”, were published by Hunter himself and lithographed in Boston by J.H.Bufford, who produced many early views for Nathaniel Currier. Winslow Homer and John Perry Newell, who were apprenticed to Bufford at the time, were responsible for drawing the lithographs on stone. “They form an interesting series: Hunter was as much of a topographical draughtsman as an artist, but the pictures are pleasant little ones likely to increase in interest and value. They contain several good views of Chaudière Falls, on the Ottawa River, a natural phenomenon very popular with artists.” (Spendlove) Other subjects include Rideau Falls, the Ottawa River viewed from Barrack Hill, Junction of the Gatineau, the approach to Suspension Bridge, and Timber Slide on the Hull side.

192. (OTTAWA). RIDEAU CANAL. The Following Notices Of The Rideau Canal, In which is made clear, the exalted worth of the Superintendant of that stupendous work, Colonel By, Of The Royal Engineers…  8vo. pp. 22, [blank leaf]. with half-title. folding lithographed plate. new half calf (short marginal tear in plate repaired, dampstain to lower portion of leaves, hint of foxing). Kingston: Printed At The Patriot Office, January, 1832.

                                                                                                                                                 $5500

First Edition. Rare. A defence of Colonel John By against his detractors, particularly those who were critical of his expenditures, by ‘A Friend to Justice and Merit’. The original estimate for the canal had been £169,000 in 1825 but by 1832 By had increased that figure to £474,000 when his recommendation for larger locks was accepted and some defence works were added. The final cost was actually about £800,000.

Of special note here is the folding lithographed plate showing a side sectional view of the truss bridge over the Chaudière Falls of the Ottawa River, designed and executed by Colonel By. The truss bridge was the last link in a chain of bridges built across the Ottawa River in order to provide access to the forge and sawmill at Hull on the Quebec side of the river before construction on the Rideau Canal began. It was completed in 1828 and served its purpose, eventually collapsing in 1836. This is one of the earliest lithographed views to be printed in Upper Canada. Based on a sketch by John Burrows, a civil engineer who was clerk of works on the canal, the printwas lithographed by Samuel Oliver Tazewell, Upper Canada`s first lithographer, who was to move to York in 1832. This is probably the earlier of two versions of the lithograph, the other with title and `Burrows Del.` line (see Allodi).
