First Edition. Scarce: Amicus locates 9 copies of the two items together and 2 copies of the first title only in Canadian institutions. Howard was one of the first professional architects in Upper Canada, arriving at York in 1832, and in the first two decades of his residence he was also one of the busiest. His commissions included the Chewett buildings, 'Woodlawn', the home of William Hume Blake, the Bank of British North America, and the Provincial Lunatic Asylum in Toronto, built 1845-49 and demolished in 1976. He was also known for his charming Regency cottages and villas, of which is own Colborne Lodge is the most significant example. Howard deeded the Lodge and adjoining property, the present High Park, to the City of Toronto, in 1873 and at his death. Howard also worked as a surveyor for the city (he was official surveyor from 1843 to 1855) and other institutions and patrons: he surveyed the Harbour, laid out the Esplanade on the waterfront, subdivided the Peninsula (now Toronto Island), laid out St. James's Cemetery, and subdivided the properties of Henry John Boulton, Samuel Peters Jarvis and Thomas Gibbs Ridout. Howard was also a founding member, vice-president, and treasurer of the Toronto Society of Arts.

A nice association copy: George William Allan [1822-1901], Canadian lawyer, politician, and senator, served as 11th Mayor of Toronto from 1855 to 1856.

In his Bookplates of Leslie Victor Smith (1947), William Colgate suggests that among Canadian bookplate artists "probably no one is more widely recognized for the fine quality of his work than Leslie Victor Smith".

First Edition of this famous report, an eloquent and forceful indictment of the Family Compact Government, inspired and largely written by William Lyon Mackenzie. The grievances of the Reformers are listed in detail and demands are made for an elective legislative council and responsible government. A landmark document in the political history of Upper Canada.

Francis Bond Head, in his Narrative (1839; p. 7), described it as “a large octavo grievance volume, in boards, containing 553 closely-printed pages...it has been calculated (I believe accurately) that there exist in this book more than three times as many gross falsehoods as pages!”
