By 1890 Gooderham & Worts Ltd. had become one of Canada's most prominent industrial concerns, producing over half of the country's spirits. It was also one of Toronto's largest employers. “Recognized as a National Historic site, Toronto’s Distillery Historic District contains over 40 Victorian buildings that document the city’s and the nation’s architectural and industrial heritage. Between the 1830’s and 1890’s the firm of Gooderham & Worts grew from a small windmill in the wilderness to the largest distillery in the British Empire and, for a time, in the world. The 20th century brought war, prohibition of alcohol, globalization, decline, and, finally, the area’s rebirth as a vibrant arts and cultural district.” (Gibson, The Canadian Encyclopedia, Online article)

Large bird's eye view of Toronto looking north from the harbour to a bit to just north of Bloor St., extending westward to just past Dufferin St. and eastward to about River Street. The railway lines, docks and numerous ships in the harbour and many smoking chimneys stress the commercial and industrial prosperity of the city.
The population of the city had by now grown to about 120,000. While some of the buildings such as the Mail Building at Queen and Bay and University College were distorted to make them appear more important in the view "in most cases the images of individual buildings are sufficiently accurate, detailed, and well proportioned to be of use to the historian. This is particularly true of the centre of the city, which was inevitably changed more than any other area. Most of the buildings…that were built before 1878 [1886] can be located, along with many others for which no firmly dated illustrations survive. The birds-eye view reveals how these buildings were linked with one another, not only in the streetscape but in the context of the whole city…This bird’s eye view...shows more clearly than either maps or streetscape photographs the congestion of the downtown core and the unrelenting zeal with which the grid pattern of streets...had been stretched across the landscape on either side of the arrow-straight line of Yonge....”. Lith. of Endicott & Co. N.Y. Published by E. Whitefield Toronto 1854. 19 1/4 x 35 7/8 inches (48.6 x 90.8 cm.) (image). (browned). matted & framed (27 5/8 x 42 1/8 inches) (70.2 x 107 cm.). (not examined out of frame). Toronto: 1854. $8,500
Large-scale mid-nineteenth century view of Toronto by Edwin Whitefield, an itinerant topographical artist and teacher who is best known for his accurate lithographed views of North American cities, charming landscapes, and five illustrated books on New England homes. He emigrated from England to Canada c1835 and moved to the United States in 1837. Whitefield's views of Canadian cities included Hamilton, London, Ottawa, Kingston, Quebec, and Montreal in addition to this one of Toronto, all dating from his stay in Canada from 1852 to 1857.
Whitefield’s 1854 westward looking view “illustrates a city of over 40,000 inhabitants centred along the harbour and the original City Hall, the site of today's South St. Lawrence Market and the Market Gallery. The busy harbour and Toronto's original shoreline came up to the back of City Hall, where The Esplanade is today. Not long after this image was created, the shoreline would undergo reclamation to allow for the railways.” (City of Toronto, Market Gallery)
