“Anne Meredith Barry was born in Toronto, Ontario, 1932. In 1954, she graduated from the Ontario College of Art. From 1955 to 1986, she lived and worked in Boston, Montreal, and Toronto, before moving to Newfoundland in 1987. She is known for her paintings and prints, primarily landscapes with various atmospheric effects that are often reminiscent of 19th-century Japanese woodcut prints. She usually generates a generalappreciation for the Canadian scenery that surrounds her. Recent solo exhibitions include Newfoundland Images at the Windsor Printmakers Forum in Windsor, Ontario in 1992, a show at the Masters Gallery in Calgary, Alberta in 1996, Down North: A Coastal Journey at University of Toronto's Blackwood Gallery in 1995, and touring public art galleries until 1999. She has also participated in many group exhibitions between 1973 and 1996. Her works are included in a multitude of North American public and private collections. Anne Meredith Barry lived in St. Michael's, Tors Cove, Newfoundland.” [Biography courtesy RBC, Corporate Art Collection, website].

3. BIEHN, Joshua F. [active 1879-1906]. [48th Highlanders, marching on King Street, Toronto in the Diamond Jubilee Day Parade, June 22nd, 1897]. 12” x 18”. oil on paper board. framed.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       $2,500

Joshua F. Biehn was an artist who lived and worked in Toronto circa 1891-1906; he might have been a cross-border artist. He painted genre scenes and portraits (including many stereotypical black subjects) in oil and watercolour. He received acclaim for his painting “Uncle Tom” (also exhibited a work or works entitled “Sambo”). He exhibited at the OSA, [1891-93], and the Toronto Industrial Exhibition [1891-92]. Small portrait examples are in the Royal Ontario Museum, National Archives of Canada, National Portrait Gallery in Ottawa, and the Smithsonian Institution, Washington. The artist was also known to have produced extra examples of some of his most popular works.

A very similar version of this painting, which was signed and dated 1897 by Joshua Biehn, sold at a Joyner Waddington’s auction in May, 2007 (hammer price: $2,700). That work was also discussed in Emma Kreiner’s essay published by Concordia University in 2012. Our example differs in comparison with that work in that it is unsigned, slightly smaller, and includes a depiction of the sign for “John Kay, Son & Co.” (a drapery store) on one of the buildings (this could perhaps indicate a connection with that firm, or commission from that company). Both works also depict “The Canada Life Assurance Company” sign on their old King Street office-fronts (today Canada Life / The Great-West Life Assurance Company).

Provenance:Bearing original “Roberts and Son, Artistic Framing and Gilding, 721 Yonge Street Toronto” label to verso.

“…Blomfield was described by A.H. Robson, in 1932, as follows, “As a painter he is best known for his work in water colour, in which medium he paints with a fine freedom, if somewhat traditional in execution. While he has produced many pictures of the mountains and plains, his work in Toronto and its environs constitute his most important contribution to painting.” As a water colourist he was cited by William Colgate in 1943 for his attention to changing skies, the reflection of light on the water, light and shadow in distant landscapes, scenes of his neighbourhood done in joyous colour.” (MacDonald p. 293)

"At a meeting of the Council of the Corporation of the City of Toronto held on Monday the Thirtieth Day of September 1878 the following Resolution was unanimously adopted Moved by Alderman Turner Seconded by Alderman Boswell That this Council while expressing its satisfaction at the successful completion of the new Exhibition Buildings desires to bear testimony to the energy, ability and zeal of Mr. Alderman Withrow, Chairman of the Exhibition Committee. Be it therefore Resolved upon the hearty acknowledgements and thanks of this Council be, and are hereby tendered to the worthy Alderman to whose untiring exertions, and personal supervision the success is mainly due."

Toronto's last hosting of the annual Provincial Agricultural Association fair in 1878 was a grand event. Toronto City Council and the Exhibition Committee chaired by Alderman Withrow hoped to establish Toronto as the permanent home of the fair. The fair grounds were relocated to a larger more appropriate site on the shore of Lake Ontario and the Crystal Palace building (Palace of Industry) designed by Sir Sandford Fleming and Sir Collingwood Schreiber and originally constructed for the 1858 fair was dismantled and moved there. A new ground storey was added to the building as well as a large Baroque-styled cupola. Other new permanent buildings were also erected. The present document acknowledges the vital leading role played in these developments by Alderman Withrow. When the Provincial Agricultural Association announced that the 1879 fair would be held in Ottawa, Withrow and others formed the Canadian National Exhibition Association of Toronto, The first Toronto Industrial Exhibition, later renamed the Canadian National Exhibition, Canada's largest annual exhibition and the fifth largest in North America, opened to instant success in the fall of 1879 and Withrow remained president of the exhibition association until shortly before his death. A politician, builder, and philanthropist, Withrow ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 1883. Withrow Park in the Riverdale neighbourhood of Toronto is named after him.

The present document incorporates the coat of arms of the City of Toronto and two views measuring 5 1/8 by 8 inches (13 x 20.3 cm.) of exhibition buildings, one of the Crystal Palace which was destroyed by fire in 1906, the other of Machinery Hall, which was demolished in 1959.

40. [KERTLAND, Douglas Edwin] [1888-1982](Attributed to). Perspective View [Automotive Building, Canadian National Exhibition, Toronto]. [c1928-29]. 16 ¾” x 28 ½” (within borders; 42.3 x 72.6 cm). 18” x 29 ½” (sheet, including title; 45.6 x 75 cm). pencil, ink & grey wash. framed.                                                                                   $3,500

Kertland won the competition to design the new Automotive Building in March 1929. This view, or similar drawing, is illustrated in The Journal, Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, Vol. VI, No. 11, Nov. 1929 as “Design submitted by Douglas E. Kertland, Architect, In Competition For An Automotive Building…” (p. 401) This drawing is unsigned, but, it appears to be Kertland’s perspective view for the competition.

Herbert Harold Kent’s article mentions the final design of the building was faithful to the competition drawings. “So far as the Automotive Building is concerned, very little change has been made and the finished edifice is similar in almost every detail to that shown upon the perspective and elevations submitted”. (p. 405)

This fine building has two important design elements: “…the first is the general impression one gathers of classical dignity and almost Grecian restraint; the other, paradoxically enough, is the effect of modernity. The architect skillfully, or rather, spontaneously, has harmonized these two principles to a far greater extent than we have yet seen in work that can be classed as “Modern.” “(p. 405)
