Dunn was government mine inspector for Durham, Northumberland, Cumberland, and Scotland. One of his principal aims in the present work was to promote safety in the working of collieries, a subject which he also dealt with in two other publications. Dunn owned a quarter share in the Stargate Pit which was the site of an explosion in 1826.
