SYLVIUS, Franciscus (born Franz de le Boë) [1614-1672].
Opera Medica...
Leyden: Daniel Elsevier & Abraham Wolfgang, 1679..
4to. pp. 4 p.l., 934, [26]index. title in red & black with woodcut printer's device. text in double columns. contemporary vellum, overlapping fore-edges (vellum soiled -- stains to rear cover, some foxing, scoring in first few chapters, small rubberstamp on title erased, staining to outer margin in last gatherings). First Edition. Sylvius was an early supporter of William Harvey's theory of the circulation of the blood and the founder of the Iatrochemical School of Medicine, which explained and based the treatment of disease on chemical action. The Dutch physician, scientist, and professor at the University of Leyden "was the first to distinguish between two kinds of glands: conglomerate (made up of a number of smaller units, the excretory ducts of which combine to form ducts of progressively higher order) and conglobate (forming a rounded mass, or clump). He also discovered (1641) the deep cleft (Sylvian fissure) separating the temporal (lower), frontal, and parietal (top rear) lobes of the brain." (Encycl. Britan.) "Tuberculosis was known to the ancients only in its advanced form, and little progress was made in the knowledge of the condition until the time of Sylvius. He asserted that tubercles are often to be found in the lung and that they softened and suppurated to form cavities." (Garrison & Morton) Sylvius was a pioneer of bedside teaching and is also credited with establishing the first university chemical laboratory. Willems and Berghman mention a portrait which is not present here. Bib. Osleriana 4065. Garrison & Morton (4th Edn.) 2321. Willems 1572. Rahir 1729. Berghman 604. cfWaller 9428-29 (later edns.).

TABOR, John [b. 1667].
Exercitationes Medicae, Quae Tam Morborum Quam Symptomatum In Plerisque Morbis Rationem Illustrant.
London: Printed by William & John Innys, 1724..
8vo. pp. xxiv, 315, [5]. complete with initial licence leaf. 5 folding engraved plates. woodcut ornaments & initials. contemporary paneled calf (extremities rubbed, joints cracked). First Edition. "An adherent of the iatro-mathematical school that developed under the aegis of Newtonianism during the early eighteenth century, Tabor attemped to incorporate medical animism into a mathematical framework in his Exercitationes Medicae (1724). He accepted the rational soul or anima, which presumably induced and controlled the activities of living organisms, as the fundamental cause of physiological processes. Because the anima manifested itself through the movements of bodily parts and fluids according to the established laws of physical motion, however, Tabor held that the primary task of medical theory was the calculation of the size, shape, and movement of organic structures. While maintaining that the anima was the primary force preserving organic systems against decay, Tabor followed John Friend and James and John Keill in admitting physical attraction as an independent force capable of affecting physiological activity. He construed disease, for example, as the process of which the anima, through muscular spasms, fevers, and similar means, restored bodily equilibrium by counteracting the attractive force of foreign and deleterious particles." The text served as a guiding hand for all military surgeons during World War II. Prior to this, there had never been a fracture text that dealt as comprehensively with fracture management. This remained a standard reference for decades in dealing with fractures and was translated into many languages. Still today it is a highly demanded book in areas of the world where operative treatment is not practical."
