[ROUSSET DE MISSY, Jean] [1686-1762].
Histoire Du Cardinal Alberoni, Et De Son Ministère Jusqu'à la fin de l'Année 1719. Par Mr. J. R**.
The Hague: the Widow of Adrien Moetjens, 1720..
2 Volumes in 1. 12mo. pp. 5 p.l., 291; 1 p.l., 328. titles in red & black with woodcut printer's device. 4 folding engraved plans. later full calf (corners worn, occasional light foxing). former owner's library stamp on titles. Third and Best Edition. This edition is apparently enlarged and corrected and contains the folding plans for the first time. It is preceded by two editions of 1719, the first published at The Hague, the second, with a fictitious Hague imprint, actually published at Rouen. NUC cites four, one, and two copies respectively. Forced to flee France because of his Protestantism, Rousset settled in Holland, where he established at The Hague a reputable school for the instruction of young nobles. Upon the success of this, his third publication, he decided to close the school and devote himself to writing, producing a long succession of mediocre historical works. Giulio Alberoni, an ambitious Italian, was appointed agent of the Duke of Parma at the court of Madrid, where he won the favour of Philip V, became a cardinal, and then prime minister of Spain about 1716. His surprise attack on and capture of Cagliari and other towns of Sardinia then belonging to the Emperor of Germany, led to an outcry all over Europe against his violation of the rights of nations. Alberoni consequently was removed from office and banished from Spain. Barbier II 773. cfCioranescu 57562.

SEELEY, Sir J[ohn] R[obert] [1834-1895].
Life And Times Of Stein; Or, Germany And Prussia In The Napoleonic Age.
Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1879..

First American Edition. "This book.is probably Seeley's most solid and lasting contribution to historical knowledge, but it was not one of his most successful productions. He had little taste for personal detail or for simple narrative, and the character of Stein hardly lends itself to attractive biographical treatment. But as an elucidation of the anti-Napoleonic revolution, and of the share taken by Stein and Prussia in the revival of Germany, the book has no rival in the English language." (DNB)
