A year after Hertz's death, Marconi embarked on a series of experiments near Bologna, establishing a wireless communication over a distance of more than a mile within twelve months. In 1896 he took out in the UK the first patent for wireless telegraphy based on Hertz's discoveries, but exploiting radiations of a much longer wavelength. His first signals were at first transmitted over one hundred yards, but by December 1901 he had sent his first transatlantic telegraph signals from Poldu in Cornwall to St. John's, Newfoundland.
