First Published Edition of this parody of Johnson's criticism of Gray's Elegy in The Lives of the English Poets. Although in the Advertisement the editor claims that the criticism was written by Johnson, printed for publication, and then withdrawn, it was soon known to be the work of John Young, professor of Greek at Glasgow. "Boswell called it 'the most perfect imitation of Johnson', and Sir Walter Scott praised it as 'the cleverest parody of the Doctor's style of criticism' and 'very capital'.
