Second Revised and Enlarged UK Edition of a work previously published anonymously under the title An Account of Jamaica and its Inhabitants. By a Gentleman Long Resident in the West Indies (London: 1808), although no mention of this is made on the title or in the preface and Sabin does not make the connection. Stewart provides a general overview of the island, with interesting remarks on agriculture, trade, government and laws, naval and military establishments, white inhabitants, social classes and professions, education, the maroons, condition and treatment of the slaves, their religion and amusements, and the diseases to which they are subject. Appended are two further essays, the first on the various means proposed of improving the minds and increasing the comforts of the slaves and on the abolition of slavery in the colonies, the second on the epidemic which broke out among the troops stationed in Jamaica in 1819. "Sir Rowland Hill, however, Trollope's decided adversary in most things, has left it upon record that his mission to the West Indies was fruitful in valuable results, and that his suggestions for the improvement of the packet service had the assent of nautical men."
