In 1843 Wolff, a Church of England missionary, was sent out to Bokkara by a committee which was formed in London by Captain John Grover in order to ascertain the fate of Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Stoddart and Captain Arthur Conolly. Stoddart had been sent to Bokhara to negotiate for the release of Russian captives there and to attempt to conclude a treaty of friendship with the ameer, Nasrulla Khan. Both he and Conolly were publicly executed after enduring great distress in a rat-infested prison, and Wolff himself barely escaped alive from his adventures. cfBlackmer 1833.
