Amsterdam: Ex Officina Schouteniana, 1760..
4to. pp. 7 p.l., xxxii, [2], 31, [5], 1112 [i.e. 1104; pp. 601-08 omitted in pagination]. title in red & black. woodcut ornaments & initials. commentary in double columns. An attractive copy in full contemporary green vellum (a few leaves creased). engraved armorial bookplate of 'Peter Nouaille, Greatness'. First Edition Thus, edited by Peter Burman the Younger [1714-1778] from materials left by Pieter Burman the Elder [1668-1741]. "This is greatly superior in every respect to all the preceding editions, and is justly called Editio Optima. It is, says Führmann, a very valuable edition. The remarks, which are partly critical and partly explanatory, present a rich treasure of solid literature and happy illustration." (Moss) "This is unquestionably a very superior edition, and it contains a greater fund of critical illustration than the preceding one by Gesner [Leipzig: 1759]; inasmuch as Burmann had obtained possession of a number of valuable notes which Heinsius had composed towards a third edition of Claudian, and particularly his "Sylloges Var. Lect. ex ingenti Numero Manuscriptorum". The celebrity of Burmann in his preceding editions of the Latin poets is not impaired by this erudite one of Claudian; throughout the whole there is a great portion of sagacity, learning, and happy conjecture." (Dibdin) Claudianus is regarded as the last of the Latin classic poets. Born in Alexandria about 365 A.D., he became a resident of Rome and a favourite of the regent Stilicho. The celebrity he acquired was so great that a statue was erected to him in the Forum of Trajan by the emperor and the senate. His principal works are 'The Rape of Proserpine', a 'Eulogy of Stilicho', and 'The War Against the Getae'. Dibdin, 4th Ed., I p. 472. Moss I 377. Sandys II p. 455. Brunet II 88-89. Graesse II 194.

An esteemed edition of this collection of anecdotes, arguments and observations on rhetoric, philosophy, geometry, history and other subjects by the Roman writer, grammarian, and judge. The work is particularly important for the numerous fragments it preserves from the works of lost ancient authors. "The notes of other critics are selected with judgment, and the explanatory remarks of Gronovius must give every scholar the most exalted idea of his singular erudition." According to Ernesti, it does not contain all the notes of the first Variorum edition, but a great number of the observations of Thysius, Oiselius, and J.F.Gronovius. It has also the entire collation of two Mss. by Scioppius, and some excerpta from the corrections of Ludovicus Carrio." (Moss) Dibdin (4th Edn.) I p. 341. Moss I pp. 204-05. Brunet II 1524.

First Edition of the English Translation, with extensive commentary, by Barten Holyday of the satires of Juvenal, incorporating the fourth edition of Holyday's translation with commentary of the satires of Persius Flaccus. This is also the first English translation to be illustrated, most of the engravings being the work of David Loggan. Prefixed are testimonials by scholars Thomas Farnaby and John Selden. Holyday [1593-1661] was chaplain to Sir Francis Steuart and afterwards to Charles I. Before 1626 he became archdeacon of Oxford, and in 1642 was created D.D. "A translation noted for 'rigid fidelity'. Holyday was 'a writer of great learning, and even of critical acuteness, as the excellent commentary on the author fully shews.' - Tytler. Dryden observes, Holyday's 'interpretation and illustrations of Juvenal are as excellent as the verse of his translation and his English are lame and pitiful.' 'The most literal translation; and certainly the most learned notes are contained in this volume of all the translations of these caustic authors.' - Heath." (Lowndes) Juvenal inspired many authors including Samuel Johnson, who modeled his 'London' on Satire III and his 'The Vanity of Human Wishes' on Satire X. He is also the source of many well-known maxims, including that men should pray for 'mens sana in corpore sano' rather than wealth, power or children, that a perfect wife is a 'rare bird' ('rara avis in terres nigroque simillima cycno'), and that power corrupts ('quis custodiet ipsos custodes'). Brueggemann pp. 659-60 & 680. Wing J1276. Madan 2927.
