First Edition. Palafox De Mendoza was appointed in 1639 Bishop of Angelopolis (Puebla de los Ángeles) in Mexico. In his efforts to protect the natives from Spanish cruelty, he forbade any methods of conversion other than persuasion, and met with bitter opposition from the Jesuits. First Edition. A first-hand account of political and social conditions in Mexico following the Mexican War of Independence from Spain. The handsome aquatints and lithographs are after drawings by Mrs. Ward.
