Sir John Fox Burgoyne, royal engineer, was the illegitimate son of General John Burgoyne [1722-1792]. He served in Malta, Sicily, and Egypt, 1800-07, with Sir John Moore's expedition, 1808-09, with Wellington throughout the Peninsular War, in the American campaign, 1814-15, and in the Crimean capaign, 1853-55. From 1845 to 1868 he was inspector-general of fortifications. Burgoyne became a general in 1855 and was created baronet in 1856.
