Daru's history of the republic of Venice is regarded as one of the best works on the subject. "Il n'éparna rien pour en fair un monument historique: recherches sur place et dans les registres de cette république, comparaison des documents imprimés et manuscrits." (Nouvelle Biographie Générale) The eminent French statesman was highly regarded by Napoleon, who made him a councillor of state, a count of the empire, and intendant-general of the imperial household, and employed him as commissary-general, financier, and negotiator. First Edition of this extensive account of the war between the United Netherlands and France, England, Münster, and Cologne, 1672-73. Of special interest are the fine etchings by Romeyn de Hooghe, including depictions of the brutal murder of the De Witt brothers by an angry mob (a large plate consisting of four separate scenes), the siege of Gröningen (with plan), the taking of Coevorden, the French atrocities, &c. There is also an attractive suite of portraits of, inter alii, the Prince of Orange, Christoph John, and Cornelius De Witt. Second and Best Issue of the most complete edition of this detailed history of the author's homeland. The second part, consisting of three divisions, is devoted to a chorographical description of Friesland and an examination of its civil and religious constitution. The work had been previously published a number of times, beginning in 1596, but here the text is greatly expanded, handsomely printed in folio, and double-page maps and a plate have been added. The first issue did not contain the plates and the text did not include the critique, index, and other textual matter. The maps and plans by N.Geilkerkius include a map of the region and fine city plans for Leeuwerden, Franeker, Harlingen, Bolsward, Sneek, Worcum (half-page), Dockum, Staveren, Sloten (half-page), Groningen, and Emdan. The author was professor of history and Greek at the University of Groningen, of which he was also a rector.Berghman 1822. Brunet 25201. Fabrice wrote a series of letters describing their experiences to the Duke of Holstein and the Baron de Görtz.
